Doctors in Ahmedabad said that over the years the number of burn and accident injuries during Diwali has gone down. In fact, they say it is often infection cases and respiratory troubles for which the calls land in Ahmedabad Medical Association's (AMA) helpline numbers.
The association on Friday gave out a list of contact details of doctors from each speciality who would act as a coordinator for those who call them with an emergency.
"These coordinators will ensure that the patient is directed to the nearest doctors. This time, we have doctors for the critical patients too," said Dr Mehul Shelat, president of AMA. This is the ninth year of the association offering the doctor on call service to help cope with the shortage and absence of doctors during Diwali. This year the service will be available from November 5 to 12.
Dr Shelat further said the trend points out to an increase in cases of Swine Flu, Chikungunya, Jaundice, Dengue and several other viral infections.
On an average, the service receives 650 calls during the Diwali every year.
Dr Pragnesh Vachharajani, who first came up with the idea of having a doctor on call service during Diwali, said increased awareness the number of burn incidents has come down over the years. "What we now get is often infection problems and respiratory ailments. This is particularly true for asthma patients for whom the change in weather condition and the smoke in the atmosphere during Diwali cause a lot of trouble," said Vachharajani.
He said the patients in case of non-emergency cases can consult the concerned doctors on WhatsApp too.
