Actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth moved Karnataka High Court on Monday to seek the release of his movie Kaala in the state, reports NDTV. The superstar's comments over Cauvery water released upset the Karnataka film fraternity and Karnataka Film Chambers of Commerce has banned the release of the movie.
KFCC president Sa Ra Govindu had said, "A decision has been taken that Rajinikanth's movie will neither be distributed nor screened anywhere in Karnataka." Govindu admitted that the actor's statement on Cauvery issue made them take such a decision.
The KFCC president said the ban on distribution and screening of Rajinikanth movies will continue.
"The ban will remain because neither will he apologise for his statement nor are we going to pardon him," PTI quoted him as saying.
The actor has a great fan following in Karnataka, especially Bengaluru and Kolar where there is a sizable Tamil population.
South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce secretary L Suresh said they had sent a letter to KFCC to solve the problem by convening a meeting with the Kannada outfits. "The ban on Kaala will not only affect the Tamil film industry but also the Kannada film fraternity and the Indian film industry as a whole," he told the news agency.
While all the attempts are being made to get the movie released in Karnataka, Kamal Hassan, who met with CM HD Kumaraswamy over Cauvery issue, said that he did not discuss the movie ban in their meeting. "Discussion was not about 'Kaala'. Not a word was spoken about it. There is a (film) chamber, business community who will take care of it," he added.
Water for irrigation is traditionally released from the Mettur Dam in Tamil Nadu for Kuruvai on June 12 annually but seems unlikely this year as had been on several other occasions due to low storage.
