Ranji Trophy: After batting collapse, tough for Rajasthan to turn things around

Services’ bowlers brought the team back on rails on Day-2 of group C Ranji Trophy match against the hosts Team Rajasthan at SMS Stadium on Tuesday. Seamer Sachidanand Pandey’s five-wicket haul did maximum damage leaving Rajasthan gasping in its effort to go past Services’ first innings total of 228. Resuming from its overnight score of 45 for 1, the hosts looked completely at sea facing the the moving ball.

Diwesh Pathania complemented Pandey well and sent packing the opener Amit Gautam, left-arm batsmen Robin Bist and Ashok Menaria. Rajasthan’ callow batting line-up stood exposed as batsmen fell like ninepins without putting up a fight. Centurion of the last game, wicket-keeper batsman Chetan Bist’s 46 from 87 balls was the only saving grace. Tajinder Singh Dhillon and Aniket Choudhary tried taking the team to safer waters, but their resistance too did not last beyond the score of 18 and 12 respectively and the team captitualated at a score of 136 in the first innings.

Rajasthan captain Mahipal Lomror conceded that the pitch had considerable grass and was bowler-friendly. “The pitch is favouring fast bowlers and the seam movement they are getting is making things difficult for the bowlers. I think apart from what the challenges of the testing pitch, I think our batsmen could have played more judiciously instead of giving their wickets in an attempt to play wrong shots,” Lomror added.

Clearly, batting was difficult on the capricious pitch. When Services came out to bat for the second time, they already were leading by 92 runs and consolidated the lead of 219 runs by the end of the day. Team Rajasthan’s frontline bowlers— left-arm fast bowler Aniket and right-arm seamer Tanvir-ul-haq— put up a disciplined bowling show and chipped in with two wickets apiece. But if the team wants to keep its chances alive in the match, they will have to restrict the visitors before they touch the target of 300. “Anything below 300 will be chasable. I am hoping that bowlers will wrap up Services before the target touch 300,” the Rajasthan captain said.

At the end of the day’s play, Services were 127 at the loss of 4 wickets with Rahul Gahlaut and Vikas Hathwala on the crease.

DAY-1

Team Rajasthan scythed through the brittle batting order of Services on the day-1. Living up to their reputation, the hosts’ fast bowling attack comprising Aniket Choudhary, Tanvir-ul-Haq and Nathu Singh bowled with extreme consistency and folded the opponent at a score of 228 runs.

DAY-2

Services’ bowlers compensated for the poor batting display and ran through the batsmen, restricting Rajasthan at 136. Trailing by 92, the hosts have an uphill task to make their way back into the match as Services have already taken a lead of 219 runs.
